    Default Scare and Concern...About plates

Ok so Brynn slipped and binged her head on the end of the table. She didn't cry and there's no red or bruising but we now notice a bump on the cranio side where her temple meets the front part of her head and we are concerned she may have sheared the plate connecting them. We were told because of her age that it could happen due to the plates being softer than the bone (which was really hard when they performed the surgery) anyway Dr. office is obviously closed, since there's no bruising or redness we are hoping for the best. We are calling in to make an appointment regardless but need some peace of mind.... Anybody had the unfortunate experience of having a plate shear? What were the symptoms? Man just kind of freaked out...

Oh, my!! I can't be of any help to you, except to send my prayers that everything is just fine there in her beautiful little noggin. Hope you can get a hold of someone tomorrow for some reassurance. I notice that you had the operation at CHLA? We're dealing with metopic cranio here in LA and was wondering which Dr. you saw? We're seeing Dr. McComb at Children's... Anyway, hang in there and keep us posted!!

We had the surgery at CHLA we have had Dr. Krieger for NS and Dr. Hammoudeh for PS. McComb has seen Brynn a few times after the surgery. We just spoke with Dr. McGee (A PS at CHLA) this evening and he said not worry she probably is fine. He said that after about 2 months post op things are pretty solid and they'll get her in this week, but if there was no bruising/redness etc. that things were probably fine. So that's reassuring!

Good news! Hope you get an early appnt. this week for reassurance. Did you like CHLA and the Dr's there? I'm looking for 2nd opinions at this point and am awaiting a CT scan for Ian in the next couple of weeks. CHLA is supposed to call for an appnt. this week. Did Brynn have a CT done at CHLA? How was that?? I'm nervous about the sedation.

Anyway, so glad you got a warm body on the phone. PHEW!

Sedation for the CT was fine , Dr.'s were great, the hospital stay on the other hand was well... an experience.... basically felt like we were in a 3rd world country and hope we never have to go through that again. Your mileage may vary. But needless to say we weren't thrilled when the nurses brought an interpreter in to speak with our "roommate" and in Spanish asks where they are from and if their daughter his vomiting constantly has had any vaccinations to which she replies "No". Yeah not to comforting when your daughter has a huge wound and is separated by a sheet. But I digress... Dr.'s were great just be prepared to have someone at the hospital round the clock for the 3-4 days after the surgery, the nurses were by only once ever 2-3 hours and there's no way Brynn would have made it if my wife wouldn't have been there round the clock.

yeah they never really told us much other than "due to her age and how hard her skull was we'd be concerned that since the plates are softer than the bone that they have a higher chance of shearing and breaking" and they never gave us a timeline of when things would be healed enough to came fears. In their defense we never asked either :) Anyway glad to hear some reinforcement of "it should be healed enough" thanks!
