Bryson's surgery is almost here...

I just wanted to let everyone know our sweet Bryson will be having surgery on Oct. 21st at Cook Children's in Fort Worth to correct metopic cranio and trigonecephally (sp). It has been a stressful journey and it is only getting more nerve racking as the date approaches. He will be under the care of plastic surgeon Dr. Obaid and neurosurgeon Dr. Donahue. Has anyone on here been under their care? We also would appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers. I know our little man will pull through just fine. We are ready to be on "the other side" .

Also what should we expect during and the following days after surgery? Any input from an experienced parent would surely help calm our nerves. God Bless!

The count down is stressful, but you are almost there!

In the 'Testing and Surgery' section there are some threads at the top (called stickeys, cause they stay at the very top) that have advice on what to bring to the hospital, etc. It was a really great resource that I read through before our surgery last year. TONS of tips, like to bring warm clothes (hospitals are freezing!), and to bring toys that feel, smell, or sound familiar to your little one. There is a good chance their eyes will swell shut and something familiar, is a real comfort to them. Also remember yourself. Rest when you can and bring things to keep you entertained when your LO is sleeping.

My son is three weeks post op for metopic and trig. The first night after surgery he was sleeping basically the whole time. Days 2-4 were rough with the swelling and closed eyes. When he started coming off the meds on day 4 he was definitely more aggravated but responded to us singing/talking/holding him. The first week home is a little rough because they are cranky and not sleeping well, but soon after they really do come back to their normal personality. It's quite amazing. Pack warm clothes, books that play music, clothes for the baby (zip up sleepers), and small blankets that smell like home. My son actually really enjoyed taking walks in one of the hospital"s strollers instead of laying in the bed or being held the whole time. I actually let him sleep overnight in it the one night we had to share a room when we were out of the picu. Good luck...it will be over before you know it and it will be successful :)

Thank you all for your thoughts. I think the hardest part will be seeing his little eyes swell shut. I will be sure to bring lots of farmiliar items from home to comfort him.
