CEPHALOHEMATOMA. Anyone have any experience/info?

this is what dr. fearon believes Alex's bump is. he said it's not concerning and it should go away in a couple weeks or so.

I've done a little research and it seems this is most common in newborns who had a tramatic birth via use of forceps, vacuum, etc. I also read that before it's gone it'll calcify and become hard...then it's reabsorbed by the body I guess.

anyone's little one had one of these before? If so, how long before it went away? I wanted to get Alex to the pedi today, but we got a lot of snow yesterday (schools closed today) and I hate to get the kids out and drive the 20minutes to the doctor's office.

I think that is what they called the lump that appeared on Andrew's forehead. CFS and NS said it was from the plate dissolving in that area. They told me not to be concerned unless it was still there after 6 months. If it was, I had to take him back in and they would re-examine him and maybe do some tests. It went away in about 5 months and never seemed to bother him once. We have not had to see the docs again.
Sorry, I wasn't even thinking about that when I responded to your other post. Never put the two things together because they are in different areas.

Thanks Angi, altho not well, I can see it on your avi pic. Five mos sounds like a long time :( I'm hoping Alex's doesn't take that long.

It's strange how in your case it was caused by disolving plates, and in ours, it seems to be caused by Alex hitting his head.

I am not sure if it would be the same thing or not, but my son Tristan had what they just called a 'Hematoma' from the birthing process. Big bump on the back side of his head. He grew into it over the next 4 to 5 months.

If Dr. F isn't too worried about it, I be he will just grow into it...but it will prob take some time.

I actually have one! On the back of my head right in the middle from being born. They had to take me out as my Mom put it i.e. forceps or vacuum. She said it was a little bigger when I was younger but I always worry when I get my haircut that people will be like what is that lol..Anyway, it is about the size of a blueberry now and is still there, never had any issues with it...Hopefully Alex's will just go away completely!!

My new little one, Sierra, has one. They think it was there because she was sitting so low in the pelvis for a long time and due to birth (came out slightly sideways and face up). She's 6 weeks old today and its probably a good 1 1/2" (i think we use metric measurements here) circular size. Its starting to calcify around the edges and blend into her skull. We were told it could take 3 - 4 months to go away!

Debbie, is what you have the same thing? wondering why yours never went away? I'm glad it's on the back and outta sight, lol.

Susan, thanks for that info. I've been reading and have only found info about newborns a cephalohematomas....not anything about post-op babies getting them. I've also read that it can take up to 3mos or so to fully go away :(
