Do you think they are in pain?

My grandfather asked me yesterday if I thought Nathan was in pain. My first thought was "No". But then I got to thinking that I really don't know. He hasn't had his surgery yet (still waiting for them to call us with the date) and he has sagittal synostosis. As I thought about it more, he doesn't like to lay on his back at all unless his head is turned or if he is laying over my legs and his head is dangling. Maybe his head does hurt? Maybe it is just uncomfortable since he has such a long head? What are your thoughts?

Honestly, do I think there is a possibility that they are uncomfortable at times... maybe. I do not think they are in pain though. I think we would know it. I mean I think there would be unexplained crying, grabbing, pounding at the head... something to show us that something hurts. I know they are so young and can't show us everything, but I knew that there was something was wrong before we found out Andrew had reflux. I knew because of his cries and irritability. I did not know what it was, but I knew he was hurting somewhere. I think it would be the same with head pain.
I am no expert, but it is how I see it. Maybe it is how I need to see it, but whatever the reason, it is what I choose to believe.... what I have to believe!

I think you are right too. He doesn't seem in pain, but it just wasn't something I thought to ask the docs. I do think he is uncomfortable though. Thanks for the input!

Probably not pain but diffently can be uncomfortable in certain positions. I remember when Tyler was little and when he was in his infant seat he was not happy unless his head was to the side.

I also agree about them being uncomfortable. I believe Hayden got torticollis because he had to have his neck shifted a certain way in order to feel comfortable.

Fiona rubbed her forehead a lot before surgery....she would dig it into my shoulder, the side of the couch, anything.....she didn't do it post surgery, maybe a coincidence....but I'll never know.

Same here.... Avery would also hit his forehead sometimes.....but I think it is more of a discomfort than pain....otherwise he would have been more vocal about it.

I totally agree on the uncomfortable thing. Sophie was so bossy in the back that she couldn't lay on her back without truning her head, she also never slept thru the night. After surgery she has sleeps like a champ, I'll never know if it's related, but I can't help but think it is.

I don't think they are in pain. I know Nicholas also never laid with his head straight back, but that is because with the narrowing of his head and the occipitul bump, he couldn't.

Noah is a very fussy baby and his cry sounds like he's in pain but now that we know he has reflux that could be alot of it. When he is the worst though he will often rub his eyes with his fists till his skin is red and looks sore. I don't know if his eyes hurt from icp or maybe he has allergies too. He often has very glassy eyes so I tend to think allergies. Its so hard to sort it all out.
