Scar?

How obvious is your child's scar? My husband saw a kid in the waiting room at the surgeon's yesterday who had a buzz cut and a very obvious scar. He is now sorta rethinking the whole surgery, since the scar really freaked him out.
I figure Gavin won't ever have a buzz cut without it showing, but with some hair it should be fine. Is that right?

It's a bit different with girls....I showed you Fi's scar...it was not noticable....one person a few months ago asked me about it when I was shopping, her hair was parted funny that day.....Dr. Phillips told me that they do a day surgery that helps minimize the scar if it's too thick....I'm leaving that up to Fiona when she is older.

I told Doug about Fi's scar, and how it war really not that noticable unless you looked for it. And Dr. Forrest told us about the day surgery option when he is older. But doug was still pretty upset by the scar (that plus the pre-consult with the anethetist really got him upset). He says he is still on-board for the surgery, but i know he know has lots of doubts.

My son had his surgery at 10 months of age so he had more hair at the time but go look at his pics and you will see that the scar is not noticeable at all. He is about 9 onths post op but the pics are from a couple of months ago. I dont think he will ever get a buzz cut but longer hair is cute on boys anyway... I think. I dont think I would be able to cut Sams hair real short at this point even if he did not have the surgery... love the locks too much. I would not worry about the scar... My doula from Sams birth, her son is 18 and he had the surgery when he was a baby and I did not notice the scar at all... He is gorgeous. You can only see it when his hair is wet and then he tells all the girls he had brain surgery when he was a baby... all the kids think he is a rock star. Plus doesn't your husband know that chics dig scars!!

Jason's scar is healed great. You cannot even notice it. He had surgery at 5 months.

Alex's isn't exactly a scar yet, but the incision looks sooo good. I'm just amazed. I think later on, when he's older, it will hard to find the scar from this. I hope I'm right.

we cant even find Haileys scar!!!!!! When someone asks about it I really hav eto search for it. She does have a ton of hair but her insision is so small that you really cant tell where it is

The anethetist appt is the worst one, it made me want to cancel the surgery.....they have to tell you all the bad stuff that *could* happen.
I think we all go through doubts and a ton of "what if's" just put your trust in the wonderful people at Sick Kids....they are awesome and will take the best care of Gavin.

If I buzzed Andrew's hair the scar would be very obvious. Right now it is well hidden in his hair on one side, but there are issues on the other. The right side of his incision did not heal well for some reason. The scar is wider there. With Andrew's light, thin hair you can see it a bit. I am sure it is going to be less obvious as he gets older though. I do hate it, but knowing everything I know now, I would have to say that a scar is better than the possibilities of what could have happened if we had not done surgery.
I wish he did not have a scar, but I am glad he is functioning well and we do not have to watch him so closely for delays. I was never fully on board with surgery. I almost backed out more times than I can count. If I knew the scar was going to be bad I may have. Now I think about it and I realize that a scar is a small price to pay to have a healthy baby. Andrew's brain is fine, but he has a scar. that is better than the other way around.
You have to do what feels right, but try not to let a scar change your mind. I know it is a difficult decision and every new negative detail makes it that much more difficult, but you have to look at the big picture.... and in the end all you can do it follow your heart and accept your decision no matter what it is.

I would do a search on here to see if anyone has had surgery with your Dr. and if they have pictures of their scar. Liam's looks amazing and it will be very very hard to spot, I even think he could wear a buzz cut... but I saw a little guy who had surgery in town but with a different Dr. and the scar was exactly what I feared ours would be in the worst case scenario. see if you can find out what typical results with your Dr. look like. maybe the little guy was atypical or maybe they moved and were just seeing your Dr. with out having had surgery with them!

My husband has a scar that shows up when his head is wet and he keeps his hair longer on top, but I totally agree with Amy about the Brain surgery comment... because I thought it was really an amazing story on my husband and a bit sexy too. I love the fact that he had this crazy surgery as a baby... now if I'd known I'd have to go through it with one of my own it might have been a little less sexy... but still chicks do love scars, and no matter the scar results you can present it in a manner that he is proud to wear it in the future.
