Ember gets her helmet off tomorrow (yay!) but even though I've been waiting for this for months, now I am freaking out! The other day she had the helmet off 'cause I was about to give her a bath. She was sitting on the floor & toppled & hit her head. She never topples! I guess her balance was off without the helmet. Anyway, she didn't hit hard, either of my other kids probably wouldn't even have cried if that happened to them. But she started screaming so hard & it was like she couldn't contain the pain. She was frantically kicking her feet & grabbing at my shirt like she just couldn't handle it. I looked at her head and I guess she hit where there are some screws. She got a big lump with red marks where the screws are & her incision scar turned really red. So now I'm scared to death to take the thing off! I mean she barely bumped it! And what about the soft spot? She has a quarter sized soft spot on her forehead. Kids bump their foreheads all the time! What if she bumps her brain???? AAAAH! HELP!?!

Andrew did not have to wear a helmet after surgery so I do not know exactly what you are going through. I do know the fear of your little one damaging their brain, messing up the surgery, and/or re-injuring everything. The first time Andrew fell after surgery my heart stopped. He fell onto the brick step that leads to our fireplace. Once Andrew stopped crying and I new he was OK for the moment, I started to cry. Then I immediately came on here.
If your surgeons feel she is well enough to be out of the helmet, I am sure she will be fine. Scary times though! I wish I could offer you more. Deep breaths and one day at a time Hun! We are here for you!

Oh, i'm so sorry that happened! What a scary thing for her (and you). I have no advice only that maybe you can get a little foam one for protection until she gets used to it?
Sorry. All I can offer is :hugg and :pray

I wish I had some advice for you, however, at the moment I have no post op or helmet experience. Would it ease your mind if you discussed these fears/concerns with her surgeon? So sorry your going through this. I'll be saying a prayer for you and Ember. Stay strong, you have made it through the hardest part. We're all here for you whenever you need anything.

My son Jason is also right coronal. He had surgery on Sept. 3 2008. He still wears his helmet during the day. His PS said he will be in it possibly up to 18 months (he is now almost a year). I know the feeling I am so scared when he doesn't have it on! He has 2 soft spots at the top of his head.

yay!! The helmet will be off woooowhooo! Freedom!!!!!! I just want to tell you what Dr Fearon told me before we left the hospital. He said "Crystal, she is going to fall down and bump her head- its going to happen and as long as she doesnt get knocked out its totally fine. Just act like I didnt do anything to her head-- she is completely normal" And this was me :shocked Yeah Right!!!!!!!! lol I swear if I could have wrapped her in bubble wrap I would have!!!!!!! And the trith is she did fall down a few times- of cousre she would be pulling up on everything and trying to walk right after we got home. BUt she is fine-- and I reallythink now her head is even stronger than before!! lol She is walking now and falls alot-- and thankfully usually hits the back oh her head- but she just gets right back up and keeps going. She is at that point now where she watches my face for my reaction before she decides what to do-lol
I hope this helps a little-- I know that the situation is different as we didnt have a helemt or screws but your feeling are normal momma! And she will do just fine and so will you!!! Cant wiat to see pictures!!!

Congrats on making it to Helmet Good-Bye time!!!! That's AWESOME!! I know it'll be scary, but you'll get throught it. Dr. Fearon said the same thing to us. "Kids hit their heads all the time. I comes with the territiory. You'll know it's bad if they get knocked out. If not, then don't panic, they're fine." Ian's wacked his head more time than I can remember since surgery and so far, nothing worse than a bruise now and then... Hang in there, Mommy! In a month, you'll be asking yourself what you were so worried about.
