I think that my husband and I have come to a decision reguarding Kevin's head. Given the fact that the are unable to fix the base of Kevin's skull (regardless of whether it is cranio or not) we decided that the risk is greater than the benifit in having the surgery. Something the ps said that has been ringing through my head is, "you cannot put a square house on a crooked foundation", meaning that since they are unable to fix the base of his head, which is the worse part of the deformity, even if the can fix the top it my still end up looking twisted because the base is crooked. I hope that all makes sense to you all.
At this time the surgery is not considered to be medically neccessary because there is not pressure on the brain and the deformity is not affecting him in any other way. We are going to continue to have scans done periodically to check for any brain abnormallities and go from there as needed. While I was looking for someone to tell me that they can fix my son, I am ok with this for now knowing that it is not impairing him.
We are, however, going to have his neck scanned to see if there is a need to have the muscle released due to the severity of the torticollis. The ps suggested this because he said that even thought the deformity may not be caused by classic positioning problems (laying on one side of his head too much), there is a chance that is could be caused by his head being cocked to the one side and pushing the other side out.
Thank you all so much for your much needed support and encouragement in this time of struggle.
