We met with the NS yesterday and he said Brandt will wear a helmet after surgery to protect the many open places on his skull. He said the helmet will NOT be for reshaping. Has anybody else had this? It seems like most people on this site either have CVR with no helmet, or endo with helmet reshaping therapy.

Thanks for any input--I'm so confused! :thinking

our surgeon uses these as well. it was a foam/rubber type helmet. he only had to wear it for 6 weeks and only when he was where he could bump it, in the stroller, car seat, etc.

We were offered one if we were worried about her bumping her head. We declined and she was fine.

I wish we would have been offered something like this because Julianna is stressing me out. LOL

We weren't offered one, but I think I would have taken it had we been offered...those first few weeks after surgery were so stressful - we freaked over every little bump against the floor, toys, etc. I think the helmet would have been more to decrease our stress level, though. LOL. Seriously, I would take one if offered.

I think it is a good idea to protect the skull. Just make sure to ask a lot of questions...make sure that the halmet won't affect the shape of the re-forming skull!! It seems that if there were a great advantage, then more surgeron would offer it...but I could be wrong!

We Had One Too. I Loved It. It Was For Only 6 Weeks And He Didn't Need It When We Knew He Wasn't Going To Bump His Head Like In The Stroller Or Bed. I Loved It So Much I Left It On A Little Longer Than 6 Weeks Because He Was Learning How To Walk And Kept Falling Down.

Bryan wheres a hard plastic helmet with foam underneaith for protection now for about 6 years now after his firist surgery. good luck. They get used it it. The first one he had was foam but he just graduated to a hard one due to sports and other issues now that he is nine years old now.

yes, it was so good for my stress levels. i just worried all the time about another child hurting her head. we had the option of having a protective helmet made to fit underneath a summer or winter hat too. we only used the helmet for about 6 weeks.

Jay had the cvr and my ps uses the helmet post op for protection as well as shaping. He has been in the helmet for almost 3 months!

I was just reading through this thread again and I looked at the date when I posted this. Two weeks after I posted this Julianna fell on a toy and shifted the plates in her forehead. Of course it was the side that he did all of the work on. We are waiting now to see if it will fill in by itself without another surgery. We really could have used a helmet!!!

Jules had such a BIG soft spot after surgery, that we got a little helmet prescribed to us to protect him. Foam rubber, I think, blue. He still wears it when we're going to be outside.

Yes, that is the same blue helmet Brandt has. I think once he starts crawling we'll have him wear it more. I can't stand the chin strap. It really chafes his skin.

Becca, I'm so sorry about Julianna! I hope everything is okay.
