Hi there,

My little boy had his surgery in May and he has done amazingly great! Thank God! Only question I have, is the scar. One portion of the scar is wider than the rest of the scar. The plastic surgeon said scars will tighten over time. Have anyone seen this? Is it too soon to be concerned that his scar is wider in different areas? Do they tighten?

Thanks and Happy New Year!!

Chris

Gabe's CFS said his scar is a bit wide too. I haven't noticed if it is wider in one area than the other, since he has longer hair. I can see his scar from time to time depending on how his hair is.

Our CFS said we could have an outpatient procedure done when Gabe is around school age if we wanted to make the scar smaller. I didn't ask many questions because it is a ways away and honestly I was SOOO nervous about them suggesting another surgery that when he mentioned the scar I just took a huge sigh of relief!! :heartbeat Those appointments always make me nervous.

I never thought of the scar tightening....I too would be interested to see if anyone has had that happen. Our CFS did say that they wouldn't attempt to do any changes with the scar until his head stopped growing (again, around school age).

:thinking scar appearances can improve over time, but I never hear of tightening. Maybe it's possible? I know I was told it can take a good 6 months for new hair to grow around a scar to make it less visible. My son's scar was very wide. He was going to get a scar revision, but they made it thinner during his last op. it's still wider than it should be, but 100% better. Scar revisions are really simple and can be done at any time as the child gets older. I think it would depend on the child's age if topical anesthetic can be used or if they need anesthesia. My mom had a revision done on a very large scar on her knee/leg. She said it didn't hurt at all and was done right in the dr's office.

I've seen my surgeon's handy work and most of the kids have a really nice thin scar post op.....Fiona isn't one of them. She had issues with the scar for both surgeries. WHen she had her 2nd surgery 9 weeks ago her scar was wide, so he did a scar revision, but it didn't work. She had an implant put it and sometimes it can stretch everything and cause the scar to widen....well it happen to her. So we were told that if she wanted a scar revision that he will do it after age 12, I have decided that it's up to her of she wants it or not....but we won't find out more until next Nov when we go back for a follow up, he told me it can take up to a year to see how the scar is going to look.

Our son's surgery was 6 months ago and the scar is wider on one side. No hair has grown over it. The plastic surgeon told us it will, that it takes about a year. My aunt who is a nurse told me one side is usually wider because that's where the incision started.

Yep ours is wider on one side than the other. We were told to rub vitamin e oil on it 2x a day right afterwards to keep it from spreading.
