I need to take Kd to a get an eye exam to check the optic nerve. Can anyone familiar with this test give me some info? Kd is 20 months and I'm wondering how they do it, because she rarely is stops moving :) Thanks!

AJ just had his and did really well considering he didn't want to look at the doctor. They used finger puppets on him and just kept things going. They dialated his eyes first and had us wait in the waiting area for about 20-30 minutes before the test. He did ok. Just try not to worry. They know how to handle kids who don't cooperate! :)

Ours does the same, talks and has lights on the ceiling to distract andrew for 2 sec to put drops in to dilate we wait in the waiting room go back & he whistles & talks andrew who hates strangers stares at him like why are you whistling & then its over! Its always been ok for us. Good luck to you i'm sure she'll do great!

The first time we did it we went to a doctor who was older and not as used to younger kids. It did not go well, but it was over quickly. They held him down and he screamed like he was hurt, but he wasn't he was just annoyed. He was younger (about 6 months) so it was much worse because I could not explain anything to him.
Now we have one who is good with younger kids and who is familiar with cranio. We have to have both kids checked this year. I believe it will go much better since the office has many different toys and things to occupy the kids.
It pretty much goes the same way everywhere though. They put the drops in and the kids go sit and/or play for 20+ minutes. When the eyes are dilated they shine a light in and check the nerve. The actual tests lasts less then 5 minutes. I recommend bringing sunglasses to wear out of the office because the dilated eye can be overly sensitive to light. You may want to keep him in dimmer lit rooms for the rest of the day. Other than that it is not a big deal.
