When we do our 1 hour of helmet time a day my little girl pulls her hair out! It's crazy. As soon as we take off the helmet she starts pulling at her hair and scratching her nails into her head. I quickly put her in the bath to distract her, but when I get her out of the bath she continues to do it. I'm thinking her head might itch, but after the bath I thought it might get better. By the end of the hour her poor scalp is all red with scratch marks and her hair is coming out. :dunno

Sophie did (and sometimes still does) the same thing. Usually she'll only do this on days that have been really hot or she has sweated more than usual. I think her head is just itchy when it happens. I usually take the helmet off and wash her head then I'll comb her hair for a while, she likes that a lot as it gets some of those itchy shots for her.
I have noticed that she has some dry spots on her scalp that have been flaking off sort of like dandruf (Sp?). I don't know what's causing this but we have an ortho appt next Tuesday so I'll ask about it then.

Thanks for the reply! :) Let me know what they say about her dry spots. I feel like we're pretty close to having the same thing happen to us. I'm thinking their skin is pretty susceptible to fungal infections from the moisture. But I wonder if the kiddos are too young for anti-fungal shampoos. They absorb everything in their skin so easily. BTW, congrats on only having a month and change left of therapy. I wish I was in your shoes. Sophia is such a cutie pie and her head looks great!

I picked up some shampoo for cradle cap this weekend and used it once and it worked like a charm on her dry scalp. I had forgotten about cradle cap since it usually happens when they are younger, but I'm pretty convinced that was her problem. Her scalp is nice and clear now. I also got some new shampoo that I'm going to switch her to, I was just using baby wash for her whole body but I'm going to try the shampoo for her head and see it that cuts down on the itchy-ness. I'll let you know how that goes.

I think Sophie did too but it went away quickly after the surgery. Now that I know what it is I'm surprised she hasn't had it more often being stuck in that helmet all the time.

Leigha had the same thing and yep the cradle cap shampoo did the trick. I bet their little heads tingle a little without that helmet. Now a bit of funny advice...when you're kids graduate beware of head bumps...Leigha didn't realize her head wasn't so indestructable anymore and would throw herself on the floor hard or bumb a chair and wow no helmet that hurt...screaming from her and mommy worrying she was going to shift her skull or something from surgery..lol.
