View Full Version : syndactyly

I remember seeing a few on here who have had syndactyly.

As we're looking more into syndromes I'm noticing more things about my family/myself. I don't want to worry anyone, as I do realize that everyone has some oddities and it doesn't mean that they have syndromes. I just know that with my family there are SOOO many oddities and serious medical conditions that the geneticists are sure that we have a syndrome.

Anyways, I was wondering who on here have syndactyly and what the doctors have said about genetics/syndromes associated with it. Here's a picture of my left hand that shows some of the webbing. Earlier today it finally dawned on me that this is probably why my rings don't feel good on my finger and also why it's uncomfortable for me to hold hands with my hubby with our fingers interlocking. In the past, I always thought it was due to his hands being so large and mine small.

Here's pictures of my hand and foot from another thread. Clara and I have Saethre Chotzen. Our hands aren't webbed, but they're odd looking. I have very small fingers. Most people have a ring size of 6 or 7. Mine is a 3 1/2.

I have it on my pinky toes. You should have just seen me, i was sitting here staring at my hands, and asking the girls to spread their fingers, lol.. mine is cranio syndrome related.

My DH and I have the same issue with interlocking our fingers. We checked our hands, but there was no webbing.

There is a space between my pointer and middle fingers when I put my fingers together and straighten them. The space is from the point of where the finger connects to the hand up to the knuckle. I'll have to take a pic. Does anyone else have the space?

I can't answer the syndactyly question. I guess I'll google it...or maybe I should bing it! Here is what I got when I binged it - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syndactyly

I was just looking at my hands, too. :giggle How much webbing has to be there until it is considered syndactyly? I have a little bit of webbing, but I think that it is "normal"?
My mother has very short fingers and large knuckles, and then my pinkie toes are curved sideways. I have no idea if all of this is related to our syndrome or not.

My mother has very short fingers and large knuckles,

I have short fingers and fat knuckles too! I just always thought it was because I had "daddy's hands", but then again, the cranio came from my daddy's side... hmmm...

I think that's what my question is too. How much webbing is normal and how much is considered syndactyly?

My dh's hands don't have any webbing at all. My children each have some, but I don't know if it's "normal" to have some or if that's considered syndactyly.

Leigh, IDK, my hands look similar to yours and Cheryl, I wear a ring size 4 1/2 (use to be 4 until my late 30's). Leigh, your nails look great, btw!

Here's something weird about toes, ds (kid number 3) has short second toes. They are as short as his pinky toe. He was born like that. When dd (kid number 4) was born, thought her toes were normal - up 'til around age 4 or so, now she's got one short second toe. Doctors shrug it off and a chiropractor friend call it a "Midget Didget" and said it means nothing other than you probably can't wear flip flops.

Any one have something similar or any links for the short toe thing?

Okay, gotta get off line! Catcha later!

LOL Thanks Sharla! I've never had a manicure or anything like that so your compliment really surprised me.

About the toe thing, my second toe is smaller than most other people I've seen. It is the same size as my 3rd toe and is somewhat "joined" together at the base. My older brother has the same thing, but more pronounced than mine. We used to tease each other about having "siamese twin toes". Some of my children also have the shortened second toe.

Bumping this up. Here is a good picture I found of toes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webbed_toes

I think A may have this on one foot. However, it's never been brought to my attention by a Dr. I'll have to have the Dr look at our next appt. I don't see any other signs of a syndrome. I'll try and get a picture over the next few days. If your child has webbed toes, can you post a pic? Has your child been diagnosed with a syndrome?

Fiona has the same toes as you Jess! Her toes are the same size and the 2nd and 3rd can't spread really well. She had really broad feet, shoes are so hard to find for her.

:) so maybe it is normal? until i saw this post I thought nothing of it. My dad's side of the family have some unusual hand and feet issues. our fingers (i inherited that) are crooked.. like put your hands togather pinky to pinky. mine make a V at the first knuckle.. and so on and so forth for each finger.

Some family members on my dad's side have an extra finger or toe.. and have a 2nd ankle. I have no clue what else to call it. it looks like they have 2 ankles. My aunt said it was an extra bone. *shrug* I have no clue if it is related to a syndrome.. as far as I know there is no cranio on that side of the family, but then i dont know everyone.

very interesting post! :)

Janet - You have pretty hands. Your toe nails look good too! I think your hands and feet look pretty normal. I have really long fingers too!

I read that the webbed toes can occur in 1 out of 2000 -2500 cases. The same as cranio...hmmm? I'll post pics soon!

Yes, lets see the second ankle.

When my sister was in high school, she went in for a physical to play sports and they discovered she had an extra bone in her leg.

Ok, here are Adam's toes. I think the left one looks ok, but the rt one is webbed. Right? Is it normal for only one foot to have it and not the other?

Im glad this thread has come up. Josh has clinodactyly of the pinky fingers, also his 2nd toe on his left foot is short. we were told all of this isnt linked to craniosynostosis! i was going to question oxford about it, but forgot! makes me wonder if it is linked? ive got photos but not sure how to attach them.

I upload mine to my profile albums and then copy and paste them in the thread. If you put them in your album, we can always find them there... You could also put them in facebook or snapfish and share the link.

I know in yoga class I am supposed to concentrate on my own practice, but when my mind wanders, I have found myself looking at everyone's bare feet at one time or another. I've graduated from headpicking to digit analysis :)

I have noticed that almost everyone has curved toes to some degree or another. I used to think my feet were weird, but my toes are relatively straight. I don't notice hands as much because it seems like most people have straight fingers once they are pressed into their mats.

I think unless there is something really obvious, most of us just have typical, individual variation.

Now I just hope I don't sound like a weirdo.

Haha...no, not a weirdo. It's hard for a mind not to wander in yoga.

Both my son and I have webbed toes on both feet. Hubby, son, and I all have crooked pinky fingers. Not sure where the cranio comes from. I assume my side.
