Hello all

Well all has settled here and Logan is doing great. I have two questions and am hoping to get some feedback..........

His incision is wonderful...we noticed the one side swelled far gretaer than the other and that side also had way more bruising.. this side also swelled behind the ear right wear the incision begins and seems to have pushed his ear forward--it looks twisted. He had perfect ears before the surgery. I asked the one Dr who saw him on rounds----------and he said you mean the soft tissue damage? and did not seem at all concerned--all the other doctors who saw him on rounds never even seemed to notice it------has this ever happened to anyone else? ALl his other swelling is completely gone except for this area right near that ear and incison....it has a big swelled bump there too..............I wonder if this is where they began the surgery--if it makes it worse??? Hoping his lil ear will return to normal--it seems to have gotten better so I am hopin git just needs more time to heal.

My son is a belly sleeper!!!!! The dr said he could sleep on his belly as long as he turns his head from side to side during the night--he had the pi procedure done and does not need a helmet-----------right now he only wants to sleep on the side that has no swelling-----------we try to lay him on his back as often as possible---has anyone had any bad effects from allowing the belly sleeping after this kind of procedure?

TY

I'm so sorry that I can't answer your questions, but really hope someone who can help chimes in soon. Hugs, the post-op side of things comes along with it's own set of worries. Hang in there.

I don't know for sure either since we had a different procedure. Though I will say it took months for the swelling to completely go down. Sure, she started to look "normal", but when you look back at pictures now, even months out from the surgery, you can still see swelling compared to later shots.

I would watch for signs of infection and if you're really concerned, call the doctor. When is your next postop?

The swelling to one side for my son was because he was laying on it. They told me to alternate the side he was laying on to keep the swelling more even. He did have one spot on his incision that was concerning to me too. The bumps took several months to go away, it was the plates and screws that were making these bumps. I think it took a total of 18 months for all of them to go away.
Congrats to being on the other side! Hopefully the swelling will go down soon.

I'm just seeing this post...My son's ear did the same thing on one side. Hopefully, Logan's swelling is gone by now and his ear is ok. How is he doing?

I agree with the pp that the swelling will be greater on the side in which he sleeps. My little one actually slept in the bug position with his forehead down on the mattress and bottom up in the air. It scared me, but I guess it was the only position that was comfortable. I just checked on him all the time. :) I hope you're doing well!

With Ian, I saw so much more swelling over the ear area then any other... His head became so much wider then front to back. We didn't have that weird ear thing happen, but did have his swell-o-meters (his ears jutting straight out from the sides of his head) in full bloom. I hope things are progressing downward today. Keep us posted... Hang in there, you're well on the other side!!

Avery's head aslo swelled more on the left than the right but it did even out. It took about 4 weeks really to get back to normal.
