View Full Version : Bone powder or paste?

I have been told by the doctors that Audrey will possibly have large gaps in the area where bone will be removed during here surgery. She is 4 years old for her first surgery for left-coronal and is having an FOA. Because of her age, it is likely that not enough ossification will occur to fill in the gaps. We were told that titanium plates can be used but that there is also a powder. Is this the same as bone paste? We were also told that this powder is very expensive and not covered by insurance. Is this the experience people have had? I would like to learn more about this as it is likely we will have to do something a year or 2 post-op.
Many thanks for your help,
Jennifer C.

I'm not sure? I will try to remember to ask at my next appointment w/ the NS to see what she says......

This is a good question, as Dillon's NS has mentioned his defect will need filling, but said he would be doing it with "bone dust". I started to research the difference, but I've got to get ready for work now. I'll let you all know what I figure out tonight!

from what mikayla's dr told me, it is the same thing.. it's a cement like mixture with bone dust.

I sure hope Kalem won't need any touch ups and we had the traditional CVR and FOA as well. I really don't know that much about it but if you do get any info please share as I would love to know more on this subject. I hope you find all of your answers. Jen, when is her surgery again?

Audrey's surgery is April 26th (although that date has a small poss. of changing). I will have one more meeting with the Drs before the surgery and will ask more about it. I'll be sure to post any info. I get. It did seem odd that the Dr's main point about it was that it is expensive. How expensive can it be? I'll check that out as well.
