:help Once again I'm calling on all of you; my cyber Cranio buddies! Joseph is due to have surgery again on May 21st :react. This time for a partial CVR since the springs in the back of his head didn't work very well.
Anyways, have any of your children had a helmet placed after a CVR for sagittal. I spoke to the Dr's about it and I want one placed on him for protection at daycare, home (3 year old sister), etc. The Dr's do not think it's necessary. I need opinions , advice, and so on.

My son had a CVR for sagittal at the age of 10 months and he did not have a helmet. He plays with a lot of older kids and also learned to walk a couple of months after surgery and we had no problems. I know it is scary but the surgeon assured me that his head was as tough as anyother child his age post op. Hope everything goes well with your lil ones surgery. We will be thinking of you guys. I see you live in Miami... I live in Sebastian... what Doctor do you go to. Sam had his surgery done at Arnold Palmer... are you going to Miami Children's?

Thanks for your explanation; Yes, we're from Miami and yes we will be at Miami Children's once again. His Dr's are Dr. Ragheb / NS and Dr. Wolfe for PS. They are awesome but we had decided when he was 3 months old to do the spring surgery but it didn;t turn out the way we would have liked so I'm kicking myself in the butt for it.

Please keep us in your prayers, I'm scared to death once again!

You will be in my prayers and thoughts... just remember it is harder on you as the mother than them. They are amazingly resilient and if you have a positive attitude they will feel it. I am sure all will work out.
I am not familiar with the spring surgery ...what is that and what did not go right with your son?My sons head still looks a little oval and I definately feel ridges and lumps at 8 months post op... The Drs assured me that these are normal and will work themselves out. I know I cannot see your kids head from a birds eye but he looks beautiful to me and I am sure the DRS will take GREAT care of him... as for feeling frustrated at yourself... stop that. It is not your fault in the least, we try as mothers to do all that is best for our children and sometimes it takes a little more than we thought. In the end it will all be ok and this will be your past.
Let me know if you need anything at all.
Good Luck!!
Hugs and Kisses
Amy :)

Thanks Amy, the front looks great but from about half way up his head gets very narrow and the occipital bone in the back is still very prominent. They are also goint o fix his scar since for some reason it widened so it's about 3/4 inch thick and the hair doesn't cover it in the back part since 2 surgeries overlapped.I'm sure it'll all turn out OK but I'm still sick to my stomach.

Thanks for your prayers!:hugg

hi there! my son was in a helmet, but not for protection... for shaping and reteaching the head how to grow correctly (in simple laymans, terms as it was explained to me) He had the endoscopic procedure where they actually remove a large portion of the skull rather than the reconstruction that you're son will have... your little guy should be fine without one... they are tough little bugers! praying for you and your little guy's upcoming surgery... so sorry you are having to go through extra steps... he's going to do amazing!

Hang in there..ai agree, this too shall pass!!!Timothy had CVR for Sagittal, but Dr. Goodrich at Montefiore said he wouldn't need a helmet...just to watch him and make sure he doesn't hit his headf etc. especially for the first three months. He's one month post-op and had surgery at 22 months.

We also had the CVR/FOA but for bicoronal, also with the helmet. The helmet was used primarily to help the obnes keep their new shape while they harden and grow. I completely understand your wanting a helmet for protection. It was a lot less stress on me when bumped that expensive little noggin! Good luck with surgery, we'll be praying for ya!
